February at a glance...

During the month of February the 6th graders have been designing and painting Egyptian folders to go along with Egyptian history unit.. The students had the option of using them to hold their notes, displaying them in their classrooms or taking them home. The color and detail of these paintings were exquisite.

The 6th graders have been for the last several weeks looking at images of Egyptian wall carvings and have observed why some carvings were meant to be inside the tombs and others outside. We studied the difference between sculpture that is considered a 2D bas-relief and works that are three-dimensional by looking at related images. The students created a wall carving from plaster of paris.
students carved and scraped away plaster of paris to reveal a projected surface of their image.

The carvings are mostly painted now and some students have gone on to making Egyptian jewelry. We will be using various media such as clay beads, rolled paper, embossed metal foil and thin wire. The finished works will be handsomely displayed in the showcases outside the cafeteria. A test on this information will be given.

7th graders have had their parrot illustrations displayed and 8th graders finished their copies of Utrillo paintings, which were also displayed.  Both classes have gone ahead to study more color theory. We painted swatches of color making up colors that would look light, dark. We painted primaries, secondaries, intermediates, and neutrals. After that students took a print of their choice to copy for a painting. The subject ranged from landscape, to animals and flowers. The object of painting the swatches of color was to help realize that a painting involves all of their swatches. A test on color theory will be given.  Our next topic will be printmaking and the techniques involved.
